The yoga tradition has a lot of great diet tips that still work in the modern-day. In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Patanjali recommends several simple but easy to forget diet principles. Here are some things to add to your food choices to increase health and happiness! Focus on adding instead of taking away. By learning new tips you can simply crowd out negative habits naturally and easily.
Just add water.
It seems simple but, it is to stay hydrated. Try drinking water at the beginning of the day, too much water night interrupt your sleep.
If you are not a fan of water buy those flavored waters with no calories. La Croix sparkling water is great! Or put lemon or sliced cucumber in your water for a refreshing drink. You can also drink herbal tea to add more water to your diet.
Worried about coffee don’t be! Unless the coffee is extremely strong, coffee is more hydrating than it is dehydrating. However, be mindful if coffee does make you sleep or affect you negatively. Try adjusting how much coffee you drink to stay healthy.
If you drink tap water, filter your tap water to avoid chemicals and unwanted minerals. You can also look for spring water which is known to be purer than the “purified water” in stores. However, try not to over-worry about the quality and remember to be grateful to have access to clean drinking water while others in the world do not.
Add fruit and vegetables into your diet to stop cravings.
The good thing about adding more fruits and vegetables into our diet is that usually, that’s what we are lacking in our diet. This step will give you the missing minerals and nutrients that your body needs. Getting the nutrients that we need can stop cravings for junk food.
Try making half of your lunch and dinner vegetable of some form. This part can get a little tricky. Try bringing some veggies with you to work or buy a big salad. To add fruit, eat a piece of fruit or two for breakfast and leave fruit around so that you will naturally pick it up and eat it.
Have a good breakfast.
Make sure you do eat something early in the day. It doesn’t have to be as soon as you wake up but do make sure you make a point to eat breakfast. This will keep your digestion running and reduce cravings for junk food. Think about food that makes you feel satisfied and good, not just an unhealthy craving.
Oats are one great choice for breakfast. They can be high calories so even eating a third of a cup of oats is better just for an active lifestyle.
